Born in 1964 in Eilenburg, Jens Knigge grew up in East Germany and studied to become an engineer. In 1987, he moved to Berlin where he still lives today. His photographs, taken with a camera, are printed by contact, with an artisanal approach that limits the edition of his photos to a few copies. Starting from austere subjects: medieval or contemporary architecture, the detail of a structure, a snowy landscape, he reveals sublime shades of grey, with an extreme sensitivity to light and shadows, to shapes and textures and a photography at the limits of abstraction.
Né en 1964 à Eilenburg, Jens Knigge a grandi en Allemagne de l'Est où il a fait ses études d'ingénieur. En 1987, il s'installe à Berlin où il vit encore aujourd'hui. Ses photographies, prises avec un appareil photo, sont imprimées par contact, avec une approche artisanale qui limite l'édition de ses photos à quelques exemplaires. Partant de sujets austères : architecture médiévale ou contemporaine, détail d'une structure, paysage enneigé, il révèle de sublimes nuances de gris, avec une sensibilité extrême à la lumière et aux ombres, aux formes et aux textures et une photographie aux limites de l'abstraction.
