Carlos Leal has always had a passion for photography and, during his travels, he began to take photographs to help him build the logbooks of his fictional characters. But it was in 2020 that he started his portfolio. Storytelling and minimalism are essential in his approach. For him, the importance of a photograph is where aesthetics and purpose meet and push us to question our social system. As an ex-rapper, he cannot help but have the eye of an urban journalist and the instinctive need to depict the Los Angeles he encounters on a daily basis and sees it with a completely different eye than the postcards with silhouettes of palm trees cutting through the sky of a California sunset. In the megalopolis of exacerbated fantasies, Carlos scans the streets of the city for hours on end, looking for a visual poetry that will bring him closer to this American society from which he feels so distant.

Carlos Leal a toujours été passionné par la photographie et, durant ses voyages, il a commencé à prendre des clichés pour l’aider à construire le journal de bord de ses personnages de fiction. Mais c’est en 2020 qu’il commence son portfolio. Le story telling et le minimalisme sont essentiels dans son approche. Pour lui, l’importance d’une photographie se trouve là où l’esthétique et le propos se rencontrent et nous poussent à interroger notre système social. En tant qu’ex rappeur, il ne peut s’empêcher d’avoir le regard d’un journaliste urbain et le besoin instinctif de dépeindre le Los Angeles qu’il côtoie au quotidien et qu’il voit d’un tout autre oeil que les cartes postales aux silhouettes de palmiers découpant le ciel d’un coucher de soleil Californien. Dans la mégalopole aux fantasmes exacerbés, Carlos scrute les rues de la ville des heures durant, à la recherche d’une poésie visuelle qui le rapprochera de cette société américaine dont il se sent si éloigné.
